Testimonials from past workshop students
‘Thank you for an amazing day workshop introducing soft pastels. You are a brilliant tutor, generously sharing your expertise in the processes and techniques, and pacing it perfectly for a beginner. It’s an art in itself being able to do that in a day and I know I probably stayed longer than you intended, but I hope you will understand it was difficult to stop….’’ — Jini Y, Sheffield
“Gareth is an excellent teacher and freely shares his expertise and techniques for achieving amazing paintings. His warmth, patience and encouragement are second to none and learning with Gareth is both creative and fun. I highly recommend Gareth’s teaching no matter what your level of experience.” — Janice T, S Wales
“Having attended two of Gareth's workshops speaks for itself as we are now going to a 3rd! Gareth has a knack of putting people at ease. His teaching methods are easy to follow, and he is always keen to give one to one advice to each and every student. We highly recommend!” — Ann & Malcolm K, Chepstow

Gareth Jones PS IAPS/MC
Gareth was born and raised in North Wales, UK and has emerged as an internationally acclaimed pastel artist in recent years.
Art school-trained and formerly a graphic designer, he switched to the world of fine art in 2010. His early works were painted in acrylics, but nine years ago, Gareth discovered the medium of soft pastels, and he hasn’t looked back.
In 2021, he became an Associate Artist of Unison Colour, the world-renowned manufacturer of soft pastels. Later the same year, he was elected as a Signature Member of The Pastel Society of America, and in 2024, he achieved Master Circle status with the International Association of Pastel Societies.
Winner of several international awards, he has exhibited at the Mall Galleries, London, with both the Royal Society of Marine Artists and The Pastel Society.
Working now exclusively in soft pastel, he has become a passionate advocate of his chosen medium, demonstrating and teaching workshops across the UK and Europe.
His main inspirations are the sea and coastal environs, but he is increasingly drawn to landscapes. Gareth has a great understanding of colour and composition, his works are filled with energy and passion.
Above all, he appreciates the beauty of nature and the importance of light.
Gareth will share his techniques and knowledge in his own relaxed yet inspiring style, in a collective learning experience.
The Workshop
Gareth has visited Corfu on many previous occasions but returns as a tutor for the first time. He recognises the outstanding beauty and inspirational qualities that Corfu offers the artist.
Gareth will demonstrate the strengths and versatility of soft pastel, freely sharing his knowledge and techniques of this incredible medium to enhance your own skills.
The week will comprise a combination of sketching and painting, both en plein air in glorious locations and in the studio.
Some knowledge of soft pastels is preferred, but all skill levels will be catered for, from beginners to those wishing to advance their talent, with individual attention guaranteed.
Principles such as composition, colour, values, etc will be covered, but the emphasis will be on the art of observation, identifying the potential of a subject from the outset, and maximising the effects of colour and light.
We will paint outdoors in locations such as ancient villages, waterfalls, picturesque harbours and olive groves, but Gareth will also guide you in maximising sketches and capturing photo references to work with back in the studio.
If you wish to work in other water-based mediums instead of, or alongside, pastels, then please do.
Gareth’s style is very easygoing, with the emphasis on fun and enjoyment, whilst working at your own pace.
The complete experience will be one to remember, learning and creating our art in stunning scenery, tasting fabulous food and wines and making memories with new friends.
